Book Review: The Five Little Peppers And How They Grew by Margaret Sidney

One of my favorite books, The Five Little Peppers is the endearing story of Ben, Polly, Joel, Davie, and Phronsie Pepper and their widowed mother whom they call Mamsie.  The Peppers are a poor family living in a rural little brown house. Set in the early 1900's, the Pepper Books are quaint, charming, and lovable.

Positive Qualities:

  • Exemplifies a family wherein the children genuinely love each other and respect their mother.
  • They are always willing to be teachable and learn from their mistakes.
  • They help and befriend those in need.
  • They take pleasure in simple, homemade fun.
  • Unafraid of hard work, and do it cheerfully.
This story doesn't really have any unfavorable aspects.  It is a simple story of a loving family and their friends that a young girl could read, but that also could entertain a mother, older sister, or even a brother.  This family is so sweet and charming, you will find yourself falling in love with their quaint little ways!

Margaret Sidney wrote many other books in the "Pepper Series" including The Five Little Peppers Abroad, The Five Little Peppers at School, The Five Little Peppers Midway, and The Five Little Peppers Grown Up.  I highly recommend all of these stories for children of all ages!
